Backup or reversing cameras typically sport a fish eye or wide angel lens. This allows the viewer to see an uninterrupted horizontal path from one rear corner to the other.

It is not necessary to view far away objects as the need is to view potential obstacles on the ground and the position of approaching walls other cars etc. To achieve this the camera is typically pointed downwards. When the vehicle is set in reverse the display inside the vehicle is typically wired to automatically show the backup view.
